I am deeply saddened to learn that my mentor and good friend Geoffrey has passed away. I came to know Geoffrey when I was a young leader of the First Hong Kong Group. I learned about him when the senior scouts came to tell me their experience after their interview with Geoffrey on the planning of their expedition routes. They told me that Geoffrey was a serious but kind-hearted examiner. He was well-liked by the senior scouts.
I had the opportunity to learn from Geoffrey when I became a District staff and later a Regional staff in the Hong Kong Island Region. Apart from routine meetings in the headquarters, I sometimes was invited to visit him in his office in Holland House. I was deeply impressed by his initiative ideas in new projects. As an examiner, he was fully aware of the importance of building a caring and trusting relationship with the senior scouts. He strived very hard to enhance the well-being of the senior scouts by offering them advice and guidance and to help them building self-confidence and self-esteem. As a HQ staff, he had great devotion on all his duties. His strength was that he could present his arguments in a logical sequence and very often his idea was accepted without much argument. It would appear to me that there were no difficult problems as they could easily be resolved in his capable hands.
Geoffrey always impressed me that he was a real gentleman. He had good sense of humour which enabled him to lighten up some tense moments. I had never found him showing his angry faces. I still remember 4 or 5 years ago, Geoffrey and some old scouts in Sydney hosted a dinner to welcome my visit to Australia. I was so happy to meet some very old friends such as Miss Lam who ran the B-P Restaurant in the old Regional HQ. That was such an enjoyable evening and it would appear to me that it had happened not too long ago. This in a way also reflected Geoffrey’s friendly character. He could easily be recognized as the central character no matter where he went.
He was an inspiration for all of us and he will long be remembered in my heart.
