為慶祝童軍運動成立75週年，世界童軍委員會於1981年出版了一本很有精彩的書籍，名為《Footsteps of the Founder》。編輯者為義大利籍的Mario Sica。他從童軍之父貝登堡爵士二十多本著作及他在世界童軍大露營的多次談話，節錄了650多條精髓的言論，編輯成書。最珍貴的是書中同時收錄了多張貝登堡的手素圖，展示出童軍活動時的形態，令我們看到這位創辦人多材多藝的一面。
台灣的莊坤良老師於1989年把英文版翻譯過來，先後以《貝登堡語錄》和《創始人的足跡》的標題於《童軍月刋》中連載。其後更編印成書，名為《貝登堡的足跡》。
上述中、英文版書籍，曾經於香港童軍物品供應社發售，但是，現在已經斷貨。惟可以在總會訓練署圖書館及港島地域圖書館借閱。
從貝登堡的話錄中，可以看見他的個人思想，背後包藏了世界性青年發展的哲學。同時，亦可以察覺到貝登堡在人生八十四年的生命中，隨著環境和年齡的轉變，他堅持走向一個恆定的方向，但行進的方式會作彈性的變化，去迎合不同環境的轉變。因比，童軍活動可以不斷向前發展，不會流於墨守成規，但成為了一種自強不息的運動。
下列是書中部份名言雋語，我將其譯成中文，和大家分享和交流。我希望大家再細讀貝氏的說話，加強我們對童軍運動核心方法和價值的認同。
When there is danger before you, don’t stop and look at it – the more you look at it the less you will like it – but take the plunge, go boldly in at it, and it won’t be half as bad as it looked, when you are once in it.
當遇到困難的時候，不要猶豫觀望，因為這樣做只會令你更恐懼。勇敢地面對困難，一旦開始接受挑戰，事情會變成沒有原先那麼的壞了。
Notoriety is not the same thing as Fame.

A Scout should value his honour most of anything.

The average Scout Life is a comparatively short one, and it is good for each generation of scouts to see at least one big rally, since it enables the boy to realize his membership of a really brotherhood, and at the same time brings him into personal acquaintance with brother Scouts of other districts and other countries.
童軍生活是短暫的，能夠以青少年成員身份參加一次世界大露營，親身體驗童軍環宇一家是難能可貴的。
The difference between a leader and a commander: almost any fool can command, can make people obey orders, if he has adequate power of punishment at his back to support him in case of refusal. It is another thing to lead, to carry man with you in a big job.
There are four essential points to look for a leader:
1. He must have wholehearted faith and belief in the rightness of his cause;
2. He must have a cheery, energetic personality, with sympathy and friendly understanding of his followers;
3. He must have confidence in himself through knowing his job;
4. What he preaches he must himself practice.
The essential of leadership might, in telegraphic brevity, be summed up as ‘comradeship and competence’.
好的領導者和指揮官是有分別的：擁有懲罰不接受命令者的權力，任何人都可以成為指揮官。但好的領導者能帶領別人心甘情願地去完成工作。
良好的領導者要有四種條件：
1. 他對工作有無比信念和決心；
2. 他擁有開朗、毅力、同情心及對下屬友善和體諒；
3. 他認識工作，有自信心；
4. 他身體力行，作好榜樣。
簡括而言，領導才的因素包括團結及稱職的能力。

Hiking on the open road brings you the joy of health in wind and limb, and what a glorious feeling is that of absolute fitness! Also it brings you all the fun of observation of birds and plants and people, together with the adventure of new places and new sense, with the uplifting realization of the beauties and wonders of nature.
野外遠足的樂趣和優點多的是；健康、愉快、舒暢等等。當你觀察郊外的雀鳥、植物、人群，加上在陌生地方的體驗，你會對大自然的悠然起敬。
For building a good citizen, it is essential in the first place that a boy should be taught individual responsibility to himself, for the development of his own health and own character, and also his own career; then to be a responsible being, i.e. one who can be trusted by his parents and those over him; finally to have a sense of his duty and responsibility to the community of which he is a member.

The Scout Law is the foundation on which the whole of scout training rests. The Scout Law is our biding disciplinary force. The boy is not governed by DON’T, but led by DO. The Scout Law is devised as a guide to his actions rather than as repressive to his faults.
童軍規律為童軍訓練的基礎。童軍規律亦是童軍自律的驅動力。童軍規律並不會規範童軍那些事情不能做，換轉它鼓勵童軍甚麼事情應該去做。童軍規律是行為的指引，並不是防止犯錯的規則。
Our method of training is to educate from within rather that to instruct from without; to offer games and activities which, while being attractive to the boy, will seriously educate him morally, mentally and physically.
我們的訓練方法，著重內在的自我啟發。有吸引性的遊戲和活動是我們使用的工具。透過這種方法，青少年在德智及體魄上都可以得到認真的發展。
The Movement is a jolly fraternity.
童軍運動應洋溢歡樂的朋情。
To be a successful Scoutmaster, a man has simply to be a boy-man, that is
1. He must have the boy spirit in him and must be able to place himself on a right plane with the boys at the first step;
2. He must realize the needs, outlooks and desires of the different ages of boy life;
3. He must deal with the individual boy rather than with the mass;
4. He then needs to promote a cooperate spirit among his individual to gain the best results.
具有童心的成年人，就可以做一個成功的童軍團長。也就是要
1. 童心未泯，能夠與年青的團員打成一片；
2. 他須要了解青少年在不同年齡階段的需要、價值觀和身體變化；
3. 他不單關注團隊工作，也能照顧個別發展；
4. 他能夠領導個別團員發揮團隊精神，以獲得最大的工作效果。
The whole objective of our Scouting is to seize the boy’s character in its red-hot stage of enthusiasm, and to weld it into the right shape and to encourage and to develop its individuality-so that the boy may educate himself to become a good man and a valuable citizen for his country.
童軍運動的目的是在青少年可塑性最高的時期，協助他們能夠正確的發展自我，以期最終成為社會的有用棟樑。
Smartness in uniform and correctness in detail may seem a small matter, but has its value in the development of self-respect and means an immense deal to the reputation of the Movement among outsiders who judge by what they see.
